How to make a placeholder image

1. Enter the Width (px) and Height (px), from 1 to 10,000 pixels. The preview and its aspect ratio update as you type.
2. Type a Text, or leave it empty to print the size, such as “1200×630”.
3. Choose the Background color and Text color.
4. Leave Font size (px) at 0 for an automatic size that fits the image, or enter a size in pixels. Pick a Font.
5. Choose the Format: PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG, then click Download image.

To create many sizes at once, open Batch of common sizes, tick the sizes you need (or use Select all / Select none), and click Download selected sizes (ZIP). Each image uses the colors, font and format above; when the text is empty, each image shows its own size.

Which format to choose

• SVG is the lightest (a few hundred bytes whatever the size) and stays sharp at any zoom. It’s ideal for mock-ups, prototypes and HTML templates. The text uses a system font, so its look may vary slightly between computers.
• PNG gives exact, lossless pixels. Choose it for design tools and when a real bitmap is required.
• JPG produces small files for large sizes and is accepted everywhere, including old content management systems.
• WebP is smaller than PNG and JPG and is supported by all current browsers.

Raster formats are limited to about 16.7 million pixels (for example 4096 × 4096), the largest canvas browsers can encode. SVG has no such limit.

Common sizes in the batch

The ad sizes follow the IAB standard units used by most ad networks; the social sizes match the recommendations of the major platforms.

Why use placeholder images?

Placeholders reserve the exact space an image will take before the real picture exists. That lets designers and developers check a layout, test responsive breakpoints, or show a client where visuals go without hunting for stock photos. Printing the dimensions on the image makes it obvious which size each slot expects, and a neutral gray keeps the attention on the layout rather than the content.

Because this tool creates real files, you can use them offline, commit them to a repository, or drop them into a design tool, with no dependency on an external placeholder service that might go down or track visitors.
